Following are a few sample mission statements of people you may recognize. You can see how much they vary both in form and length. However, they are all similar in that they communicate the core mission that the person wants to achieve, reflected in their values, purpose and results.

See if you can pick out all three components in each Personal Mission Statement. Some are more obvious than others!

“To inspire, lift and provide tools for change and growth of individuals and organizations throughout the world to significantly increase their performance capability in order to achieve worthwhile purposes through understanding and living principle-centered leadership.”

– Stephen R. Covey

“Mary Kay’s mission is to enrich women’s lives. We will do this in tangible ways, by offering quality products to consumers, financial opportunities to our independent sales force, and fulfilling careers to our employees.

“We will also reach out to the heart and spirit of women, enabling personal growth and fulfillment for the women whose lives we touch.

“We will carry out our mission in a spirit of caring, living the positive values on which our Company was built.”

– Mary Kay

“Let the first act of every morning be to make the following resolve for the day:
I shall not fear anyone on earth.
I shall fear only God.
I shall not bear ill toward anyone.
I shall not submit to injustice from anyone.
I shall conquer untruth by truth.
And in resisting untruth, I shall put up with all suffering.”

– Mahatma Gandhi
