Consulting and Coaching

If there’s a field that you’re an expert in, you can offer consulting or coaching services. People online are always looking for a mentor. It doesn’t have to be in business; many people offer their services as writing, parenting or self-improvement coaches. If you’re offering one-on-one coaching, your earnings potential may be limited by the number of hours you can work in a day. If you’re offering group coaching or self-paced training programs, your earnings potential is almost limitless.

Real-world adaptation: Open up shop locally and offer your consulting and coaching services in-person. Some clients work better this way due to the added accountability of meeting with their coach face-to-face instead of hiding behind the anonymity of email and phone. Depending on your comfort level and the zoning laws in your area, you may even be able to continue working from home, forgoing the expense of renting a professional office space.

Data Entry

Large companies and organizations always need people to enter their data for them. If you have good typing skills, this is a great way to make money from home. The pay varies depending on how quickly you can type. Again, your earnings potential is limited by the amount of work you can complete in a day, but since you don’t need any special equipment or supplies, you can get started pretty much immediately.

Real-world adaptation: Offer your services to local businesses instead of over the Internet. Being available in the office to handle those unforeseen circumstances that pop up may allow you to sell yourself more easily and charge more.

Accounting and Bookkeeping

Every company needs an accountant or bookkeeper, and for the most part, this is a job that can be done completely outside of the office. In some states, you need to be certified or licensed in order to offer accounting and bookkeeping services, so check your local laws. And again, since you’re trading hours for dollars, your earnings potential may be limited, but if you already have the required skills and certifications, you can get your business up and running in no time.

Real-world adaptation: Offer your services to local businesses instead of over the Internet. Since you’re handling sensitive financial data, the fact that you are able to meet with the client and deliver your services in person is an added bonus that may allow you to sell yourself more easily and charge more. It’s also a lot easier to access any hard-copy documents you may need during the course of your work, like receipts and check stubs, saving the client the time and bother of scanning and sending these documents to you.

Medical Claims Billing

Medical claims billing is a special type of accounting service that’s often outsourced to home-based providers, since all claims can be handled electronically. This allows doctors to focus on their more important work. The job involves a mix of data entry, preparing documents, submitting reports and scheduling follow-ups. This is another service-based business that is easy to get started, but has limited earnings potential according to how much work you can complete each day.

Real-world adaptation: Offer your services to local businesses instead of over the Internet. Since you’re handling sensitive patient data, the fact that you are able to meet with the client and deliver your services in person is an added bonus that may allow you to sell yourself more easily and charge more.
