Creating a website can be a daunting prospect for many. Even more daunting than creating the actual website is choosing a domain name for the new site. A website can be modified, updated, or just plain started over from scratch if necessary, but choose the wrong domain name and all your hard work is for naught.

Essentially, domain names are for life – a badly chosen name will kill a website before it can even get started. Once your domain name is registered it cannot be changed. The only way to get a new name is to register a completely new domain name and transfer your website files to the new domain. This can be a huge hassle, and possibly even financially damaging if you have just spent six months promoting a website on a poor choice of domain name – all the work you’ve done to promote the old domain name has to be redone.

Domain names brand a website, so choosing the right one can be quite challenging. The general idea is to pick a name that visitors can easily remember and that is optimized for search engines. Most important is that it reflects the content, or products and services of the website.
